Honda’s Best Family Vehicles
One of the advantages of dealing with a full line car brand like Honda is that they offer vehicles across the spectrum – compacts, coupes, sedans, minivans, crossovers / SUVs, as well as hybrids. There’s a wide enough selection that you’ll be able to find, including perfect Honda family cars, if you’re shopping in that segment.
Leading the list is the 2014 Honda Accord; large enough to serve as a family sedan, but loaded with creature comforts and technology that make the Accord a pleasure to drive under any circumstances. Fully redesigned over the last couple of model years, the Accord is available with a traditional power plant, hybrid, or all electric options. While the Accord has been a best-selling family car for decades, the latest model adds rear seat room, providing plenty of space for car seats, and enough trunk space for a stroller, suitcases, sports gear or bags of groceries.
The 4-cylinder engine and CVT transmission provide plenty of power while still getting great fuel economy. New technology includes an easy to use touchscreen interface for climate and infotainment, and the exclusive “LaneWatch” feature almost makes side mirrors obsolete. LaneWatch is a much better feature than competitor’s lane change alert technology, as LaneWatch can not only be switched on and off easily, but also advises you how far you are from other vehicles. If you’re not ready for the size of a minivan or crossover, the Accord is a solid Honda family car choice.
If you’re ready to step up to a minivan, the Honda Odyssey is an ideal choice. With three rows of seats, the Odyssey is large enough to carry the family, the team, and all the gear you need to get to the shore, mountains or campground.
The third seat folds flat for extra cargo room, and the second row of seating is wide enough to fit child seats three abreast. The middle second row slides closer to the front seat, allowing easy access to a child if need be. Storage room and cup holders are plentiful. The base model seats seven and other trims can accommodate up to eight persons.
The Odyssey is full of standard features, including a seven speaker AM / FM / CD audio system with a touchscreen interface, Bluetooth connectivity and a rear view camera. The top trim model, the Touring Elite, adds a back seat 16 inch screen to thrill the children with their favorite videos, and a built-in vacuum to clean up crumbs and spills.
The 3.5 L V6 cranks out 248 horsepower, manipulated by a six-speed automatic transmission. The power plant is the most efficient in the class, good for an EPA estimated 28 mpg highway.
