Fuel-Efficient Features of the 2018 Honda Clarity
By combining an electric motor with a gas engine, the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is able to give drivers in the Cerritos and Long Beach areas the best of both worlds with less time spent at the pump or the plug.
To help Cerritos drivers get an idea of how the fuel efficient features of the 2018 Honda Clarity may benefit their drives around the Los Angeles area, Norm Reeves Superstore Cerritos created this review.
Honda Clarity Aerodynamic Design
The first thing you’ll notice about the Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid is the aerodynamic design from roof to wheels. The body is specifically shaped for improved airflow around the vehicle and includes a rear tire cover and air curtain duct that work together to minimize air turbulence.
This hybrid is also equipped with 18-inch Alloy Wheels that promote brake cooling and are specifically designed to improve performance efficiency.
Honda Clarity Fuel Economy & Range Rating
If we look at the gas part of the Clarity alone, we see it’s equipped with a highly efficient 1.5L 4-cylinder engine. This engine gets an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 44 MPG city and 40 MPG highway, so it’s already well equipped to go the distance between fill-ups.1 The electric half runs on an AC permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor and a 17 kWh lithium ion (Li-Ion) battery. It gets a 47-mile all-electric range rating.2
This means that you can easily commute to-and-from work daily on electric power alone. However, if you do go for a longer drive, the gas engine can kick in to take your combined gas-electric driving range rating up to 340 miles.2
This set up means both less fill-ups and less maintenance.
Drive Modes
The Honda Clarity allows drivers to shift seamlessly between electric, engine, and hybrid drive modes to optimize overall efficiency. They can also choose between Sport, Normal, and Econ powertrain drive modes.
In Econ mode, the Clarity uses less of the available performance with the goal of extending the practical driving range above what’s possible with the other modes. HV mode can be activated in conjunction with any of the three powertrain drive modes to maintain battery charge during long drives at highway speeds.
Regenerative Braking
When driving the Honda Clarity, you’ll find that no energy is put to waste, even when you hit the brakes. With the Regenerative Brake System, the Clarity turns kinetic energy from deceleration into electric energy, which it stores in the Li-Ion batteries.
This system essentially uses the traction motor as a generator that recharges the batteries while braking or coasting. Drivers can use steering wheel-mounted Deceleration Selectors to choose their level of regenerative braking performance, which is ideal for preserving the braking system while also recharging the battery.
