Best Places to Cool Down in Anaheim, CA

Anaheim has no shortage of fun places to visit, but Southern California can get oppressively hot. If you need a place to cool down during the summer, try one of these three local favorites.

The Rinks – Anaheim ICE

When you imagine summer activities in Southern California, ice skating probably doesn’t come to mind. However, thanks to an architect with Disneyland experience and a snack bar that serves cold brews, Anaheim ICE is one of the best places in the city to stay cool year-round. When the pavement gets too hot to pound, turn to a form of entertainment that actually requires you to bundle up.

A vaulted wooden roof stretches over two huge indoor ice rinks, one sized for Olympic figure skating and one for professional hockey. Public ice times vary, but there’s at least 1 two-hour session every day of the week.

On Friday and Saturday nights, afternoon and evening skates take place on the larger rink with festive lights and music. On weekday mornings, kids and adults alike can learn how to skate with private or group instructions.

Pearson Park Amphitheatre & Pool

Pearson Park’s ponds and fountains are surrounded by historic homes and filled with friendly ducks, making this municipal park a more relaxing place to spend a pleasant summer day. The clean, safety-optimized playground features strategic canopies to give parents and kids a bit of relief, and there are vendors on hand with shaved ice and ice cream to bring down your body temperature.

Of course, the park’s main attractions for restless local families are the swimming pool and the Pearson Park Amphitheatre. The pool is nestled behind the fields and courts, with daily lane swimming practice and open sessions for public recreation. Meanwhile, the city’s landmark amphitheater is insulated by terra cotta roof tiles and shaded by Mexican fan palms, pygmy date palms, and Bougainvillea arbors — ensuring all-night comfort after a day in the pool.

The city of Anaheim has hosted free family-friendly shows in this Spanish-style venue since 1933, and this summer continues another tradition of one particular favorite: Summer Nights Under the Stars. Every Friday through August, the 2,000-seat theater fills with families who want to learn, laugh, or just enjoy an entertaining show after the sun stops shining. It costs $3 to attend each 6:30 pm show, and performers range from ballerinas and aerial acrobats to comedians, magicians, traditional folk musicians, and even “scientists” who engage kids with zany laboratory experiments.

Camelot Golfland

This local treasure is famous for Castles of the World, technically the country’s largest mini golf course, which keeps kids happy with nautical, historic, tropical, and royal themes.

However, this outdoor attraction isn’t the coolest thing about Camelot. Inside, a 200-machine video arcade and 5,000-square-foot laser tag arena offers hours of air-conditioned fun, and Iceberg Shakes are available in hundreds of custom combinations. Outside, it gets even cooler.

If you really want to make a splash this summer, try the five-story tube slides that twist through the sky every day except Sunday. These slides are open through Labor Day, and the public can ride them from noon until 5 pm.
